The study explores the complex factors that contribute to the resiliency and academic achievement of six adolescent African American male students who were enrolled in an urban college preparatory high school. Our findings highlight the experiences of these students as they pursued an International Baccalaureate (IB), bringing to light the challenges they faced and the academic and social resources available to them as they navigated these challenges. We offer strategies and recommendations for supporting African American students in advance placement courses.
