Abstract

Mixed methods instrument development studies, typically represented as qualQUAN, have not experienced the complexity of discussion and elaboration that other mixed methods designs have (Onwuegbuzie, Bustamante & Nelson, 2010). Although the value of integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies for the purpose of instrument development seems generally supported, the discussion of the procedures for doing so is limited.
The purpose of this study is to expand our understanding of mixed methods instrument development designs. We aim to contribute to the methodological literature by 1) developing a typology based on current practice in mixed methods instrument development studies; 2) integrating those findings with existing models for developing instruments; and 3) presenting a model for best practices in mixed methods instrument development studies.
