Navigating Parent Disengagement and Family Stressors in Adolescence: Urban Youth Co-Constructing Academic Identities in School

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 147 B

Abstract

This study explores the influence of family risk factors, specifically parent disengagement at home, on urban youths' academic identity development. Using multiple case study and semi-structured interviews, sixteen at-risk urban students were interviewed. The study results indicate that students had to navigate unstable parent relationships, mobility issues, and had to balance teacher and parental expectations across various conflicting domains.
