Critical Inquiry for Social Good: Conception of Research Within Truth-Telling Philosophical Stance Across Cultural Boundaries

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Independence Salon E

Abstract

This study originated from the authors’ theoretical work within which they explore the concept of parrhesia to challenge and re-conceptualize critical work within educational research. Within that work, the authors considered how the notion of parrhesia and the conception of educational research within the truth telling philosophical position would apply across cultural boundaries and those outside a democratic context. Eight visiting educational scholars from Iraq and Lebanon joined the study aimed at gaining in-depth understanding of how truth is conceived, defined and spoken within each culture. The expected findings will depict the diversity of meanings, tensions, and consequences of engaging in educational research informed by parrhesia. This research contributes to our understanding of parrhesis as a framework for educational research
