In my presentation I will explore the worldwide importance of evidence-based development of teaching and learning at universities. I will argue that the enhancement of the quality of learning and teaching at universities must be based on empirical evidence from discipline-specific research. In addition, cultural and societal factors greatly affect teaching and learning processes at universities. Therefore, it is important to take into account national characteristics when developing teaching and learning. Further, international comparisons can deepen our understanding of worldwide similarities and differences in teaching and learning at universities. I will further argue that the development of teaching and learning cannot be based on previous experiences or on intuition only, because empirical evidence often reveals complex inter-relationships or even counter-intuitive aspects, which should be taken into account when making strategic decisions of the future directions of teaching and learning in universities.
