Session Type: Symposium
Teachers of qualitative research methods work with students from diverse disciplinary traditions who have varied career goals. Qualitative methods are diverse, multi-faceted, and continually subject to innovation. This symposium assesses the challenges and opportunities represented by different pedagogical approaches to teaching qualitative research methods. We first present findings from an analysis of syllabi from introductory courses on qualitative research delivered in different institutions. Next, we look at specific pedagogical approaches to the teaching of qualitative inquiry in both face-to-face and online settings. Across papers we critically examine how the field of qualitative research methods is represented in different pedagogical approaches to teaching, and the challenges and opportunities that arise in teaching.
