Preparation for Working Life: Utilizing Workplace Experiences to Support Initial Occupational Preparation

Fri, April 8, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Educational policy is increasingly being directed towards how young people can be prepared for working life and, in particular, specific occupations. There is a strong need to consider what kinds of educational arrangements can provide appropriate experiences for students, meet their expectations about preparation for working life, and specific occupations, and address the requirements of employers, unions and employer bodies and professional associations. Against this background workplace experiences seems to be crucial. Consequently, it is necessary to consider a range of models and approaches to initial occupational preparation that includes workplace experiences. Presented here are a range of such models advanced by researchers from different countries and institutional and cultural contexts for occupational preparation that draw upon research projects.
