Session Type: Symposium
Professional societies, such as the American Society for Engineering Education, have stressed the need to diversify the field of engineering and increase the participation of Latin@s in STEM. However, Latin@ representation and participation in science and engineering goes beyond race and ethnicity. Latin@s face different challenges that affect their educational achievement that lead to leaks in the educational “pipeline.” The term “pipeline” has been used as a metaphor to describe the national educational landscape and the challenges students face in order to succeed in the educational system. In this symposium, we will engage the audience in a discussion about the pipeline elements that continue to affect underrepresentation for Latin@ students in science and engineering.
