Session Type: Symposium
The effects of poverty and other factors beyond instruction on student performance are well documented, and there has been growing recognition that improving student achievement requires addressing the needs of the whole child. Community schools present a model for improving student outcomes by transforming schools into hubs of supports for students, families, and the community. While evidence regarding the effects of integrated student supports continues to emerge, less is known about the mechanisms of community school implementation. This symposium aims to further this knowledge by providing case studies of community school implementation in Oakland, Chicago, and Utah.
