Session Type: Symposium
The papers in this session were brought together because they explore a burgeoning approach to data generation in education, visual research methods.
Researchers in education lack a forum where they can share conceptual viewpoints, methods, and image-based outcomes. This symposium gathers education researchers utilizing a range of photographic methodological approaches including photo elicitation interviews, photovoice, and still image document analysis (visual discourse analysis and visual as metaphor). We believe these illustrative examples will help us understand the relationship between visual data, the processes of engagement, and research in education and aid in articulating a theory for visual research that is our own: Visual Education Research.
Photography, Identity, and Dialogue: Visual Discourse Analysis and Photo-Elicitation Interviews With Latino Elementary Students - Rhianna Henry Casesa, Sonoma State University
The Internship Selfie Project: A Visual Analysis of Immersive Out-of-School Time High School Internship Experiences - Lisa Johnson Davis, San Diego State University
Visual Representations of Identity: Teacher Education in the Pacific - Marva Cappello, San Diego State University
