System change involves setting a small number of goals that identify key priorities. One of the four recently renewed goals for education in Ontario is ensuring equity for all learners. Ontario’s diversity is one of the province’s greatest assets. The government of Ontario recognizes that summer learning loss is an issue that is particularly acute among students who come from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Ontario’s Summer Learning Program (SLP) is a short-duration, targeted intervention program that provides a unique opportunity for students to access quality instruction and recreational activities outside of the school year. Since its inception in 2010, the program has expanded and continued reducing gaps in achievement for students across Ontario, Canada.
