Session Submission Summary

Reinscribing the City in Design Studies of Critical STEAM Conceptual Practice

Tue, April 12, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 144 C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session brings together design research in which city neighborhoods, diverse public engagement, and digital mapping technologies are used to create new conceptual practices for integrating arts and social science into critical STEM pedagogy (i.e., a specific realization of STEAM). Studies reflect ongoing work by three research teams working in different cities (New York City and Nashville in the US, and Volos in Greece). Teams conceptualize city spaces and how people make places in different ways, and they use a variety of new technologies to create productive learning and teaching environments. Presenters, an expert discussant, and the audience will be invited to make comparisons across teams regarding how to engage diverse publics with critical STEAM conceptual practices.
