Equity and Access in Science: Understanding Pathways Frameworks for Youth Learning and Development

Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 101

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

The session focuses on how diverse learners navigate learning ecologies, as they journey toward greater participation, legitimization, and enhanced development in the power-mediated domains of STEM, especially science. The session also explores conceptual and methodological approaches and tools for recognizing and supporting a more diverse array of pathways into/through science. Questions of access, power, and marginalization/privilege are taken up to help challenge assumptions about learning/development in science. One outcome of this session will be to draw upon novel pathway representations to push beyond science education as about economic worth and national advancement, taking up science engagement as about social justice and the public good. Implications for science teaching and learning will be central to the cross-poster discussion.
