Session Submission Summary

Assault in the Academy: Teacher Educators and the Struggle for Social Justice

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 8

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The papers in this symposium are concerned with the continuing inadequacy of teacher preparation in the United States. Most teachers enter the classroom unprepared to effectively teach African American and other students of color. The continuing inadequacy of teacher preparation in the U.S. has significant implications given the increasing racial diversity and transformation of classroom demographics currently underway in our nation’s public schools and society. The purpose of this symposium is to extend the existing literature on multicultural teacher education by examining the myriad forms of violence directed at people of color and others who are targeted as threats of Whiteness in teacher preparation programs. We are concerned with what happens, and the consequences of challenging Whiteness in teacher education.
