Session Submission Summary

Applying Cultural Construction Frameworks in Engineering Education Research

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 101

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

This session explores the application of cultural construction/production frameworks, primarily developed in anthropology, sociology, education, and disabilities studies, to the understanding of equity, participation, marginalization, and other persistent issues in engineering education. Specifically, we follow Ray McDermott’s exhortation to analyze obstacles and advantages students encounter not as stemming from a trait of the individual (e.g., “lacking math background or ability”) and/or as a “cultural deprivation” or “cultural difference,” but rather, as a production of many actors in larger systems whose actions and interpretations are constrained by the culture in which they are embedded.
