Moral Development and Education SIG Business Meeting. Moral Education: Equity and Justice in School Contexts

Sat, April 9, 6:15 to 7:45pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Independence Salon B

Session Type: Business Meeting

Abstract

Melanie Killen of the University of Maryland will be the speaker. Her talk will describe research on children’s experiences in schools and how teachers and peers are central to the promotion of moral development, including equal and fair treatment of others. As communities become increasingly heterogeneous, children and families are encountering individuals from different backgrounds on a scale not previously experienced. These encounters and relationships can both foster prejudice as well as serve as opportunities to celebrate diversity. The factors that contribute to promoting justice, on the one hand, and creating prejudice and bias, on the other hand, will be identified and discussed.
