Several trends can be observed. Educational assessment receives much attention in the press and in politics. Last year, for example, the introduction of the compulsory math test in the secondary and vocational education school was heavily debated. Besides, there is a continued emphasis on computerized test administrations and the opportunities it offers for more effective assessment. About formative assessment, there are questions on how assessment can best be used to provide students with feedback, to monitor their progress and to offer differentiated education? Finally, there is an increased focus on the quality of assessments. In this symposium, these trends will be discussed from a Dutch point of view and put into an international, global perspective.
