Save the Children's SummerBoost Camp: Helping Children

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Summer learning loss has been well documented over the past 100 years. Specifically for children from a low socio-economic background, cumulative reading loss, due to lack of experiences over the summer, largely creates the achievement gap. Save the Children has designed and implemented a robust SummerBoost Camp, based on the criteria from the National Summer Learning Association, for children in poor, rural (and one urban) communities in thirty-five schools within eleven states. Support was found that Summer Boot Camp can significantly decrease summer reading loss, but the size of this effect is small.
