English Language Learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing segment of the school population who face many academic challenges and lag behind the general school population. To close achievement gaps and increase the academic success of the ELLs, preparing teachers is the key. This study examines a project aiming at increasing the under-served ELLs’ academic success through preparing K-12 teachers in four school districts. The project took place in an impoverished area with a higher increase in the ELL school enrollment, e.g., 898 percent from 1999 to 2009 (NCELA, 2012). The teacher force was generally unprepared to match this school population. The project took an innovative approach to engage teachers in professional development, research and service. This study disseminates the results.
