Kindergarten readiness became a national educational priority in the United States in 1991 (National Education Goals Panel, 1991). It is critical to consider how kindergarten teachers view the issue of school readiness, and whether that view is changing. This research study compared responses from two nationally representative samples of U.S. kindergarten teachers' views about the elements that comprise school readiness. This study provides evidence of significant change in kindergarten teachers’ views on readiness from 1998-2010. It is evident that expectations of kindergarten teachers have increased substantially from 1998 to 2010, especially in the academic areas. The findings of this study can be beneficial for not only school officials, but also parents.
