The Teaching and Learning Inquiry Framework

Fri, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

With the recent development of standards in each of the core subject areas, we must rethink approaches to teacher education. Standards in all four areas support inquiry, thereby providing a way for organizing teaching and learning that gives students opportunities to accept increased responsibilities for developing knowledge. The Teaching and Learning Inquiry Framework (TLIF) is an approach to inquiry that consists of six interactive phases: 1) Stage & Engage, 2) Ask & Pose, 3) Plan & Monitor, 4) Search & Gather, 5) Analyze & Create, and 6) Communicate & Apply. The TLIF captures two complex parallel processes: the decisions teachers need to make in designing inquiry lessons, and the instructional moves they make while facilitating student inquiry.
