Factors Driving Student Engagement and Interaction in an Online Class

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 14

Abstract

Using a qualitative case study approach, this study investigated the specific course design elements that created, promoted, and sustained learner engagement and interaction in an online undergraduate course. Data were captured from 30 in-depth student interviews and a two-part online questionnaire. The study found three aspects of student engagement: engagement with the instructor and the students, engagement with the learning environment, and engagement with the course content. The study provides implications for online course development to guide how such courses can be designed to better support learning, as well as to create strategies to improve student engagement and interaction in the online environment.
