Digital Disparity in Public Higher Education: Using Learning Analytics to Predict Student Success and Persistence

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

Blended learning course offerings are increasingly utilized as a strategy to alleviate overcrowding in institutions of public higher education. Some faculty instruct more than 1,000 students per semester using these partially online and traditional classroom pedagogies. This mixed methods study of 18,000 student demographic and course performance records over an eight-year period, demonstrates that historic incongruities among race, gender, and socioeconomic status have migrated into these new digital learning environments – specifically, lower levels of student success and course persistence among Mexican American and African American students.
