Making Knowledge Visible: The Distillation of Course Content Through Visual Poetry

Fri, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section B

Abstract

The creative process, tools, and artistic mediums involved in the construction of visual poems serve as a catalyst of knowledge acquisition and knowledge creation. Using visual poetry in the literacy classroom as an instructional tool and as a medium of arts-based interaction between instructor, course content, and students, leads to engaged, thriving classroom environments, where knowledge can take on new, aesthetic forms. Visual poetry is a valuable and easily adoptable medium to implement arts-based learning and instruction into classrooms, in which, this form of “art” does not serve only as an illustrative function, but as an essential tool of participatory learning and instruction.
