Although alternatively certified teachers make up over a quarter of new teachers, little is known about their on-the-job training. Further, it remains to be seen whether their early classroom experiences predict higher rates of moving schools or leaving the profession altogether. This study provides evidence of the early classroom experiences and turnover among a national cohort of new teachers. We find descriptive evidence for slightly higher rates of leaving the profession and much higher rates of moving schools among alternative certified teachers. Yet, controlling for school characteristics and working conditions, we find no difference between the turnover patterns of AC and TC teachers.
