This study proposes a model of student math engagement, comprising of emotion, cognition, and behavior. Based on theory, items from a nationally representative dataset were selected using exploratory factor analysis. Utilizing structural equation modeling, three measurement models were compared. As a result, the second-order three-factor model of math engagement was found to fit the data well, and to be predictive of student math achievement. The results provide strong empirical evidence that engagement is a multidimensional construct. In addition, the confirmed model provides a subject-specific instrument of engagement in math learning, and it may be a useful tool for understanding why some students have low engagement in math learning and how to intervene to improve math learning for low performing students.
