Using a large-scale multi-institution dataset, this study examines the variation in effective teaching practices, proportion of time spent on in-class activities, and time commitment to teaching of faculty and graduate student instructors (GSIs). This study is significant for faculty members and GSIs to establish mutual understanding about each other’s teaching patterns, which can help them both to learn from each other in the process of enhancing teaching and supporting college students’ academic achievement. Implications for differences such as faculty members spending more time on lecture and discussion and GSIs spending more time in small-group activities will be discussed. This study recommends more resources and support should be provided to GSIs to enhance effective teaching practices.
