The psychometric integrity of the Obstacles to Successful Transition Scale (OSTS) for urban youth with high-incidence disabilities was investigated. Seventy students were administered the instrument. Exploratory Factor Analysis was used to refine and modify the instrument to improve performance. The resulting refined instrument had two clear factors, (1) perceived barriers to career and academic development, and (2) coping efficacy. The two factors explained more than 50% of total variance. Internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) for the two subscales was 0.87 for barriers and 0.93 for coping efficacy. Results provide support for the use of the OSTS as a formative assessment tool in the transition planning process. Implications for field practitioners are discussed.
