The Cosmopolitan Outlook of Transnational Immigrant Youth at a High School for Late-Arrival Immigrants

Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

Worldwide migration requires us to reimagine how to best prepare students as democratic citizens. This study explores the ways in which migration contributes to a cosmopolitan sensibility among Dominican youth attending a high school for late-arrival immigrants. These youth participate in a transnational social field in which they are able to draw upon multiple sources of belonging. Utilizing a combination of individual and focus group interviews, and visual research methodologies, this study helps to explain how this group of youth enact a rooted cosmopolitanism. The findings of this study have important implications for citizenship learning in the context of globalization.
