This paper examines two questions: (1) How can an urban school leadership program effectively partner with low-performing schools to support school leaders, teachers, and high school students as agents of school improvement? (2) What benefits might a school-university partnership grounded in research on intrinsic motivation, culturally responsive instruction, and school improvement offer university students who are aspiring or novice teachers and leaders? We use the literature and qualitative methods to examine how schools can be incubators of leadership for teacher leaders and principals through the use of the motivational framework. We illustrate the nature and evidence of adult learning with two different school leaders who participated in the program.
