Moving Beyond Teacher Prep 2.0: A Critical Analysis of "No Excuses" Teacher Preparation Programs and an Alternative Vision for Transformative Teacher Education

Abstract

This paper analyzes different conceptions of effective teaching and student success in Teacher Prep 1.0 and 2.0 programs and advocates for Teacher Prep 3.0. We identify key shared characteristics of Teacher Prep 2.0 programs, accelerated “no-excuses” programs including Relay Graduate School of Education, MATCH, and Teach For America. We contrast Teacher Prep 2.0 with Teacher Prep 1.0, strong university teacher education programs. Then, we advocate for Teacher Prep 3.0, a vision for transformational teacher education.
