This paper reports findings on participants’ perception of their group work in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Inspired by social learning theoretical perspectives and the available literature, our team designed experimental and control groups and, following the course completion, investigated students’ perceptions of their groups. Preliminary results show that not all of the designed MOOC groups were perceived as effective. Also, not all students saw their groups as motivating them to submit more assignments or complete the course. These findings are in contrast with the available group and MOOC literature and will inform future MOOC providers about the complexity of working together in MOOCs.
