When Girls Think Outside Their Comfort Zones: A Second Look at Digital Literacies of Urban Middle School Adolescent Girls

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Mint

Abstract

Early adolescent students use digital literacies for several purposes in-school and out-of school. The results of the study five years ago suggested that 1) using the hidden literacies in an academic context may bridge the gender performance gap, and 2) requiring multiple types of assignments will expose girls to new opportunities. The similarly situated study may yield similar results. Adolescent girls need opportunities to participate in digital literacies, which can impact lesson design and choices.
