Exploring Black Male Collegians' Experiences With Academic Advising at Predominantly White Institutions

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 159 B

Abstract

Drawing on Sanford’s notions of challenge and support, this qualitative investigation sought to explore Black male collegians’ experiences with academic advising at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and the role academic advising plays in Black male student success. Preliminary findings suggest that Black male collegians benefit from an intrusive advising approach centered on proactive, continual support on the part of the academic advisor. Implications for future research, theory, and practice are discussed.
