It Can Be Done: A Charter School's Success at Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

In this study, we explore how one innovative charter school, “Studio 4,” seeks to serve youth who are in danger of experiencing or have already experienced the school to prison pipeline. The majority of students at “Studio 4” have been chronically truant, suspended, expelled, and have had experiences in the criminal justice system. The school serves a student population where 30% are diagnosed with special needs, 60% have experienced homelessness, and 92% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Results from this study show how the school uses strategic programming, carefully selected and trained staff, core community values, wrap-around services, and a flexible learning environment to help all of its students succeed in school and become productive members of society.
