The Measure of a Teacher: Knowing and Not Yet Knowing

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 217 B

Abstract

Using an Eisnerian arts-based perspective “to make aspects of the world vivid and generate a sense of empathy (Eisner, 1995, p. 2),” the author will read an excerpt from her multi-generational novel-in-progress The Measure of a Teacher: Knowing & Not Yet Knowing. The book is based on interwoven composites of students’ and teachers’ experiences from a fictional Chicago high school to reveal clashing, contradictory forces that are barriers to becoming an effective teacher and often deny students equal educational opportunities.
