Obstacles faced by African-American Males’ present barriers to their academic success. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is successful in helping African-American Male students transcend barriers. Studies reveal that AVID’s success is based on its ability to form successful relationships among participants. African-American males remain to have significant rates of attrition from the AVID program. This study used a strengths-based model to address this problem. Participants will receive a deeper knowledge of the positive attributes of the African-American male that assist in successful completion of the AVID program, and college enrollment.
