Purpose: To examine the associations between medical students performance in simulated patient encounters during OB/GYN and Family Medicine clerkships and later performance.
Method: We investigated the correlations between clerkship OSCE scores with USMLE Step 2 CK, CS, and Step 3 Exams scores and PGY-1 program director’s evaluation scores. We also analyzed the associations between poor performance on clerkship OSCEs with failing Step 3 and receiving poor PD ratings.
Results: The correlations were strongest between the clerkship OSCE scores and the Step 2 CS Integrated Clinical Encounter component score, Step 2 CK, and Step3 scores. Conclusion: The results of this study provide additional validity evidence for the use of OSCEs during clinical clerkships given their associations with subsequent performance measures.
