Men of Color Who Teach in Single-Sex Schools: Race and the Construction of Anti-Oppressive Masculinities

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Too little research problematizes constructions of men teachers of color as father figures and role models for youth of color in single-sex schools. These mainstream caricatures of Black men teachers too often reify white supremacist patriarchal norms in schools. Taken from young Black male students’ personal perspectives, our paper considers how men teachers of color working in one widely lauded single-sex school contribute to the positive racial and gender identity development of young Black men and boys, particularly for helping them to recognize and disrupt heteronormativity and dominant notions of masculinity. This in turn, we theorize, optimizes access to educational opportunity for young men of color, especially young Black men and boys, enrolled in single-sex schools.
