A majority of studies on Latinos in education have focused on reasons for low performance for this group. However, a growing number of Latino students achieve at high levels, going on to elite colleges and universities. These individuals display “grit” in working toward high achievement despite obstacles such as poverty, family separation, and discrimination. This study qualitatively investigated the stories of 2nd-generation students at elite institutions across the US. Results indicate that family, community, and culture play a notable role in influencing and motivating the passion and perseverance that comprise grit.
