Using a nationally representative sample of kindergarten aged children, this study compares among Asian and other racial groups the neighborhood, schools, and classroom environments and the extent to which parents’ deliberate choice affected families’ residential and school selection. It is then examined how educational achievement of Asian American children is explained by these educational contexts. Preliminary analysis shows that Asian American parents were more likely than any other racial group to choose where to live based on their child’s school and have sent their child to their school of choice. Understanding how Asian American students prosper in the academic domain has several policy and practical implication for ethnic minority groups.
