Are Early-Career Teachers Turning Over During the School Year? A Survival Analysis

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 217 B

Abstract

While between-year turnover has been the subject of extensive examination, the additional turnover that occurs during the school year has yet to examined. We draw on data from North Carolina that enables us to measure teacher turnover not only as an annual event but as occurring at any month throughout the school year. We conduct survival analysis to better understand the systematic variation in the employment trajectories of three cohorts of new teachers across various entry pathways. Although novice teachers from traditional, in-state prepared programs move schools at higher rates than teachers from other entry pathways, alternatively certified, Teach for America, and out-of-state prepared teachers all leave teaching in North Carolina at much higher rates than traditionally prepared teachers.
