"We Can Be a Good Bridge": Multiethnic College Students on a Private University Campus

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Relatively little research exists on multiethnic college students. Using a theoretical framework that incorporates racial border crossing and campus climate perspectives, we present results of a qualitative study of focus group data of multiethnic students. Ultimately, we argue that multiethnic students engage in a variety of strategies to increase their belonging on campus, even when campus environments have not been designed with their multiple ethnicities in mind. The paper concludes with implications and recommendations for improving campus practices.
