Improving Teaching Through Direct Student Feedback: The Use of Student Perception Surveys With Preservice Teachers

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This national study presents results on the use of K-12 student perception surveys with student teachers. Student perception surveys ask K-12 students to rate their teachers on a Likert scale on aspects of their classroom experience including a teacher’s practices and behaviors. As part of this study, 1950+ pre-service teachers surveyed their students and received unprecedented personalized feedback to improve their teaching practice—all before entering the classroom full-time. Almost 32,000 K-12 students had the opportunity to provide feedback on their student teachers. This session will 1) introduce student perception surveys; 2) analyze how this data can help teachers enhance students’ learning and 3) outline strategies for successful implementation in the teacher preparation context.
