The Danger of Covering: Marginalized Filipino Student Schooling Experiences

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This research focuses on Filipino students’ experiences within a diverse school setting. We examine participants’ reported home cultures and how participants believed their identities were negated by the school’s predominantly white middle class culture. The participants' reported experiences reveal times when they engaged in "covering" their Filipino identities in the classroom context. This work confronts the role that teachers and schools play in students' covering and considers how schools and work to be more inclusive of all students.
