Drawing My Dissertation: Making Art and Making Sense of Multimodal Data

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This paper draws on data from an arts-based research study on the visual dynamics of teacher labor and evaluation in neoliberal times. The multimodal study engages teacher drawings, photos, and video works to consider the ways that teachers adapt and create images to make sense of, challenge, and reimagine multifaceted teacher identities and teaching work. The research also comprises a number of “re-mixed” artworks (including installation, drawing, and video) created by the author/maker as tools of analysis and to highlight the evocative and experiential qualities of the data. This paper considers two bodies of multimodal artworks which operate in and between sites of art, data, analysis, and scholarship.
