Identity-Making Moments and Places That Shape: An Inquiry Into Beginning Teacher Experiences

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This proposal is situated in stories of place. It is a work of collaborative inquiry between
two educational researchers, one from Canada, one from Ireland, and their narrative work with beginning teachers. Place is understood as a physical location and context, Canada and Ireland, and as an embodied phenomenon with emotional attachments. Beginning teachers stories are shared and interpreted in understanding how their personal practical knowledge give insight to the shaping power of place in identity-making. Dewey’s (1938) theory of experience is the foundational theoretical framework underpinning the inquiry stance.
