Mon, May 1, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 7B

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to engage LGTBQ community members in participatory research in Alabama and Mississippi. In this paper, we describe the process of conducting community-based participatory research in this population, with particular focus on some of the challenges we encountered, and some of the strategies that were useful for our work. We describe the steps we took to present our study to the Institutional Review Board to ensure clarity and ethical compliance. We also describe our recruitment strategies, and the process we undertook to train community members in research skills. Our goal is to provide a case study which can be useful for those considering a community-involved approach to understanding marginalized populations.
