With the integration of writing across disciplines, written mathematical communication has become a feature of many curriculum series. In this study, two third-grade curriculum resources for mathematically talented students were analyzed for various characteristics and features of writing. Writing provides the opportunity to meet the needs of mathematically talented students, making it an important factor in the development of these resources. Results indicate these resources included content beyond the third-grade level, and most of the writing prompts encouraged students to consider their own perspectives and to explain what they did to solve the problem.
