Voces Ocultas: Black Students' Sense of Belonging and Community Within a Hispanic-Serving Institution

Sat, April 29, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The mixed method study explored the experiences of Black students enrolled at an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Findings based on observations, surveys, and interviews indicated that the students struggled with sense of belonging and community within the institution: how being one of very few and how it impacts classroom comfort, faculty and peer support, membership within the community, and perceived isolation. Implications for research and practice will be shared.
